The 2 Lauras' attempt their first Review of a play - and an important one at that!!!
A Call to Adventure, a powerful new play written by Workable participant Paula Clarke, is a must-see for audiences across Northern Ireland and beyond.
This compelling production brings to life the story of Francis Maginn, a true pioneer of Deaf rights and sign language. From the very first scene, the audience is drawn into a striking visual portrayal of his early life—capturing his experience as a seriously ill child whose near-death illness ultimately led to deafness.
The storytelling is both moving and accessible, highlighting the importance of visual communication and lived experience.
As the play unfolds, it explores Francis Maginn’s journey through education and into employment, shedding light on the many barriers he faced along the way.
What makes this production especially impactful is how relevant these challenges still are today. The themes resonate strongly, reminding us that while progress has been made, there is still much work to do to ensure equal access and opportunity for people who are deaf, have hearing loss, and/or tinnitus.
From start to finish, the play is inspiring—celebrating Maginn’s achievements and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
It also serves as a call to action, encouraging continued change and greater inclusion in all areas of society.
If you or someone you know could benefit from support with employment, training, or transitions, AdaptNI is here to help. This production highlights exactly why that support remains so important.
