Ian joined the SkillSET programme in January 2024 after leaving his previous role due to a lack of support from management. Recognising the barriers he faced as a Deaf BSL user, he turned to AdaptNI for tailored employability support.
Ian needed help with job searching, updating his CV, and interview preparation. He also sought a better understanding of his rights as a Deaf person in the workplace. With
AdaptNI’s guidance, Ian learned about the reasonable adjustments he was entitled to—such as access to a BSL interpreter, receiving interview questions in advance for translation, and being granted additional time during interviews to support clear communication between himself, the interpreter, and the interview panel.
With this support in place, Ian successfully applied for a Delivery Driver role at Wiltshire Farm Foods. AdaptNI continued to support both Ian and his new employer by delivering Deaf Awareness Training to the wider team. This training gave staff the tools and knowledge to communicate more effectively and foster an inclusive working environment.
Thanks to these changes, Ian felt confident starting his new role, knowing that his colleagues understood his communication needs and were equipped to support him. The inclusive approach taken by Wiltshire Farm Foods helped Ian thrive in a predominantly hearing workplace.
“I really appreciate with Adapt NI with the courses they offer and to help me with the job application form and practice for the interview.” – Ian
