On 7 March 2007 ADAPT Eating Distress Association, based at 37 High Street, Lurgan launched a new book entitled “Never Give up – The Sun will Shine Again” by Breea Ross.


Image The Launch was held at the Jethro Centre, Lurgan.  Mr Colm Donaghy,  Chief Executive of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, was there to help launch the book.  The author gave a talk on her experience of volunteering with those suffering from anorexia and bulimia and introduced her book.

 

The book was funded by the Southern Investing for Health Partnership, Mental Health Small Grants Scheme.  It is aimed at carers who are looking after those experiencing anorexia and bulimia nervosa. It is also aimed at sufferers themselves.  The book is designed both as an information resource and also as a self-help recovery tool.  The book offers excellent tips and positive self-help strategies.   The book was written in response to the needs expressed by people who have accessed ADAPT looking for support and information. 


In the book the author notes that eating disorder rates are on the increase and have doubled in the last decade.  Low self-esteem is one of the major risk factors common to all eating disorders.  The building of self-esteem is not only crucial in the prevention of eating disorders, but is also central to recovery.   Many adolescents have a negative body image, which in turn results in low self-esteem and this is a vicious cycle.  Young people between fourteen and twenty-five years old are at greatest risk.  We know that early recognition and treatment of eating disorders is a vital contributing factor in recovery.  Young people need to know they can beat their eating disorders.  They must believe recovery is possible and feel they are not alone, and can talk to someone and share their worries and pain.  It is imperative that we give information to people who are experiencing an eating disorder in the early stages, and who are experiencing deep psychological issues.   It is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible, as the earlier this illness is treated the quicker the recovery.

 

The book recognises the fact that anything that offers hope to people experiencing anorexia and bulimia has the potential to heal.  Hope is more powerful than any other therapeutic technique. 

 

The book can be purchased from the ADAPT office for a price of £6.50.  All proceeds go to ADAPT (Registered Charity no XR 43015).

 

ADAPT also offers hope in the form of Self-Help Support Groups (separate groups for sufferers and carers) on the last Thursday of each month (except July & December) from 7.30 – 9.00 pm at its offices.
